The European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) was set up in 1993 and associates over 500 port authorities from all over Europe. The main aim of ESPO is to influence maritime policy of the European Union, as well as to secure the proper rank for ports when planning the economic development of countries - members the European Union and the whole European Community.

Ecoports is a non profit Foundation, set up by members of ESPO. It concentrates on the exchange of experience and putting environmental laws into practice in the day port operations. Ecoports is supprted by a network of port environmental specialists. Ecoports introduced practical Tools to bring port environmental management on a basic quality level: an environmental risk analysis (SDM), basic port environmental management system (PERS) and a certificate (PERS certificate).

European Federation of Inland Ports represents more than 200 inland ports in 19 countries of Europe. The Federation highlights and promotes the role of European inland ports as nodal points for intermodal transportation, combining road, rail, inland waterway and based on geographical accessibility also short-sea shipping.

As the voice of the European inland port network, it actively accompanies all developments in the field of EU transport and environmental policy. It is a partner in EU projects aimed at the fostering of intermodal transportation by scientific research, thus contributing to the overall aim of ensuring environmentally and socially sustainable transport in Europe.  EFIP is dedicated to emphasise the role of inland ports in the socio-economic development of the European regions.

The Ports of Stockholm have been named one of the world's leading environmental ports and for several years has been actively pursuing long-term efforst to reduce the negative effects of the port and shipping on the environment.
