The Port of Naples and tourism are interlinked - the tourist area of the harbour faces the centre of a city rich in history, art and architecture. Connections to adjoining islands, the coastline, and the archaeological sites of the region and many tourist destinations of the Mediterranean ensure visitors have an efficient transit centre for their ongoing tours. | | | The Maritime Terminal built in 1936, has been restructured recently in order to hold the new cruise terminal. Its structures, developed along the model of an airport, receive up to 2,500 passengers per day. Nearby, the ferries at Molo Beverello dock and the ferries at Porta Calata, connect the city to the islands and locations in the Bay of Naples, the Bay of Salerno, and the Cilento coast stands. The Port of Naples holds a position of undisputed leadership concerning cabotage activities in its broadest sense. An annual growth rate between 7% and 9% is predicted for maritime transport in the Mediterranean and, in recent years, the Neapolitan harbour has recorded an intense increase in traffic in the cabotage trade sector, with a mark of excellence in the field of the Highways of the Sea, whose lines to Sicily constitute almost 49% of cabotage in Italy. The New Regulatory Plan foresees the transformation, restructuring, and rationalisation of the port with the objective of equipping it for an increase in traffic and improving its capacity to receive the latest generation ships by guaranteeing greater safety with respect to the city. Its commercial area is the theatre of a logistical re-organisation that demonstrates the intermodal character of the port of Naples: the entire area will be located in the eastern zone of the harbour and connected to the highway and railway junctions. The new Levante Basin will be earmarked for use as a terminal for containers and general cargo. The culverting of the shipyard will allow the creation of an area of 300,000m² with a front wharf 672m in length. This will be utilised for simultaneous berthing of two latest-generation containerships. Infrastructure and equipment will include super post panamax ship-to-shore cranes, transtainers and reachstackers. Direct connections with the highway and the national railway network will result in a total capacity of 1 million teu’s.
